Matte lipstick is all the rage right now. If you haven’t tried it yet it’s time to do it but before you dive right in let me give you a few tips. It’s very easy for a matte lip color to go terribly wrong!
First off if your lips are dry and chapped please do not use a matte color unless you are looking to emphasize your chapped lips. Proper prepping is key. Get yourself a toothbrush. Don’t use the one for brushing your teeth. Gently dry brush your lips with the tooth brush. This will be used to exfoliate any dry skin. I recommend doing this before bed. Then apply a really high moisturizing lip balm. I love the Its Sugar brand sold in Sephora and also C O Bigelow has some great ones. Once your lips start feeling well moistured it’s time to try matte.
Now, what to pick there are large pencil sticks otherwise known as chubby sticks, lipstick type, and ones that go on like a lip gloss but dry matte. I find the chubby sticks are easiest to apply. They have a little moisture to them going on and you do not need to use a lip liner with these. I first draw it on like a lip liner and then simply color it on. Make sure you apply evenly but if you make a mistake and need to fix the chubby sticks tend to be the most forgiving.
Now to move on to the traditional lipstick type. I find these to be the least moisturizing. I use a lip liner with these. I always use a liner color that is the same as the lip color or one that is a tad brighter to add a little pop.
Finally let’s discuss the liquid kind. This is certainly the most difficult to apply and dries super-fast so if you make a mistake have fun correcting it. Hands down use a lip liner or make sure your stick in not too wet when trying to line the outer lips. As you can see I use a combination of all of these types of matte lipsticks.
The colors above are some of my favorite colors and brands to use. ( Cailyn - Narcissist, Clinique Chubby Stick - Broadest Berry, Meet Matte Hughes - Committed, Teez - Killing Me Softly. I also LOVE NARS - Cruela, not in photo)
